The Aims of Escola Popular de Direito Constitucional
About 5 years ago, ADUSEPS founded and supported a school for the favela communiity of São José do Coque. This area of has the lowest developmental index in the whole of Recife. This school has been so successful, that ADUSEPS has plans to buy land in the same area as the school, and building a larger, more comprehensive school to service the whole population. The Escola Popular de Direito Constitucional, or School of Constitutional Rights for the Population will be for children and adults, and will teach the community about their rights afforded to them by the constitution.
The Problems
There are two major problems that this project is trying to rectify. In the community of Coque, the The children and adults in this community do not
have access to education, and, as such, have very little chance of having a future or improving their lives. Families will continue to live a life of violence, crime and opression.
Secondly, without education, the members of this community have very little knowledge of their rights as citizens of Brazil. Many people here cannot read or write, so have no idea what they are entitled to. This means that when they have problems, for example with obtaining medical treatment, hospitals can take advantage of their lack of knowledge and refuse the medical treatment. The School of Constitutional Rights for the Population will enable the community - both children and adults - to learn about their rights, particularly in the area of healthcare, so they are not oppressed by their lack of knowledge of their rights.
What we do
Right now, we are fundraising for money to buy land and build the school. The school will be used by all members of the community of Coque, to provide an education and a future for the children who live here, and to educate the whole community about their constitutional rights, so they are no longer opressed by the hospitals and other institutions they encounter.
